£24m funding awarded for food and vaccine manufacturing hubs
Two new initiatives, representing an investment of £24m, will help the UK lead the world in preparedness for pandemics and epidemics, and in delivering secure food supplies in step with green priorities such as net zero carbon.
Led by the University of Bath, the Cellular Agriculture Manufacturing Hub aims to transform food production, transitioning to an environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable model in which novel manufacturing systems complement traditional food production. This could reduce carbon emissions and land use by up to 95% compared with traditional meat manufacture, for instance.
Co-led by University College London (UCL) and the University of Oxford, the Future Vaccines Manufacturing Hub aims to make the UK the global centre for vaccine discovery, development and manufacture – and enable the rapid roll-out of highly effective new vaccines for frontline use.
BAE Systems has been awarded a £656million contract
The contract has been awarded to continue the development of the RAF’s next generation combat aircraft, protecting and creating hundreds of jobs at its Lancashire factories.

HMS Birmingham steel cut milestone supports thousands of UK jobs
Steel has been cut on the first of the second batch of Type 26 warships, following a £4.2 billion contract awarded to BAE Systems in November 2022. Steel has been cut for HMS Birmingham, formally marking the start of the build of the second batch of Type 26 frigates.
Following a £4.2 billion contract for Batch 2 awarded to BAE Systems in November last year. 1,700 jobs sustained in Scotland and a further 2,300 across the UK supply chain.
The Minister for Defence Procurement, Alex Chalk KC, marked the occasion at the steel cutting ceremony, with HMS Birmingham becoming the fourth of eight anti-submarine warships being constructed for the Royal Navy at BAE Systems’ shipyard in Govan, Glasgow.
Telford manufacturer aces export markets with investment in new technology
Complex metal components manufactured in Telford are being used in space exploration and the next generation of airplanes and cars thanks to the technical expertise of a fast- growing local manufacturer.
Advanced Chemical Etching (ACE) has seen sales grow by 15% in the last year, with export orders increasing after the firm boosted capacity with the installation of two ‘Chemcut’ etching machines at its Hortonwood 33 facility.
With a strong order pipeline and new opportunities in hydrogen fuel cell markets accelerating, the company has just agreed a deal on two further machines that will help it offer increased capacity and reduced lead times on parts.
Jaguar Land Rover’s Halewood plant will be transformed into the marque’s first all-electric production facility as part of a wider £15 billion investment programme announced today.
The Merseyside site will switch to making exclusively electric cars from 2025
Including the next- generation Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Velar and Land Rover Discovery Sport models which will all be built on a new electrified modular architecture (EMA) at the factory.
JLR also announced that its Engine Manufacturing Centre near Wolverhampton will be renamed the Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre and the first of three reimagined modern luxury electric Jaguars will be a 4-door GT built in Solihull.
